@MMAS Thanks mate.

I’m just waiting for my bloody battery to charge up a bit to upgrade, but ‘WLAN stability improvements’ sounds good to me 🙂

@vinny: Knowing 3UK they will never upgrade 😦

@seven_seas: What message do you get when you try to update using NSU and what product code do you have? I needed to change my product code using NSS to install the latest firmware using NSU and then it should say if you want to re-install if you already have the latest.

PS: I used E71 EURO1 Product Code 0567045

13 01 2009
elbogi

Hello.

I changed my productcode from the original Norwegian code to the Scandinavian one mentioned i another post (0558783) with NSS. The upgrade to Firmware 200.xx went fine, but to my surprise no Norwegian language. I want to change back, but NSU claims I already have the latest firmware (200) regardless of what productcode I set my phone back to. Any tips on how I can go back to 110 on my original productcode (0570146)? Thanks in advance!

13 01 2009
gerrymoth

You can’t easily go back a firmware, you need to use pheonix or something and have the firmware version file. Even I’m not brave enough to try that 🙂

What languages are available in the phone for the Scandinaviona one via Tools/Settings/General/Personalisation/Language/Phone language

13 01 2009
elbogi

@gerrymoth : Languages avail. are : English, Finnish and Swedish.

Now, I will try the Danish codes… Looks like I’m SOL until they release 200.xx for my region 😦

I’d love to see more compact user interface where wasted space around text and icons is minimized and more content is visible for the user. A wasted pixel is not only a waste of money (it costs) but also a waste of time for us.
I wish a near future update (or a style pack) shall address that.

13 01 2009

@Rodrigo You should check out the Flahorn themes from Pizero or Taieb (Google both for their sites)

Ash

Applied update, went fine, backup restored fine.

Don’t see any sign of the improvment listed in the changelog “Device Lock improvement: Open device lock with LSK + Fn-keys”. Is this suppost to give the option of unlocking using the Fn and Shift keys simultaneously? If so it doesn’t work for me after the update.

13 01 2009
Ash

Doh LSK means left soft key, not shift key! Anyone know why this is listed as an improvement ? This is already the only way to unlock the keypad

13 01 2009
gerrymoth

@ASH I don’t see any change to the device lock method. Nokia are not very forth coming is a more detailed changelog. ‘Updates’ & ‘Improvements’ could mean anything?

Gerry,

I am on 3UK (recently upgraded to E71).

1) What exactly needs to be backed up before this upgrade and will this remove 3UK content?

2) I do use Planet 3 for checking current and previous usage, will this still be available or will it need to be set up manually (how would this be done)?

@Clint:
1. Backup your contacts, calendar, notes, etc.. via PC Suite or other methods. Personally I find the SYNC in PC Suite works fine. All 3UK Certificates will be removed if you change the product code and upgrade, this means Windows Live Messenger and 3 Games can’t be downloaded, but apart from that everything else should work.
2. There will be a link added in the web browser for 3 after you upgrade.

Just had my 1st crash/reset with the new firmware. I’m not to worried as the network here is up and down like a yoyo, I was listening to the radio, received a call and ended it, had profimail running in the background and I just received a text message all at the same time, oh and I had the E71 charging up at the time.

I’ll monitor the situation, but I’ll put it down as network issues at the moment :0

The original post was updated yesterday saying (s)he now has MagicKey working again?!

Hi,

similar to the norwegian guy with the danish product code, I have changed my german product code (0569803) with NSS to the EURO1 (0567045) to install the new firmware. All went fine. Phone works great. BUT the german keyboard layout is somewhat different from the european one, with “quertz” not “querty” and our special äöü-letters. The symbols on the keyboard simply don’t match. Slowly I get used to press “ö” to get “,” “ä” to get “.”, and “ü” to get the “@”-symbol. Does anyone know of any other product-codes, that use the german keyboard settings? Or how long will I have to wait until the 200.xxx firmware get transfered to the german custumers?

Thanks for your help.

Also had restore from card problem. Did update just before glashing which went fine. Flashing went fine. Went to tools-memory to restore, and no restore from card option was listed!
Luckily had backed up my memory card onto the computer a few days ago, so restored card, then had option to restorefrom it (after restarting phone).
Restore worked many apps listed as installed but not appearing in menus. Had to reinstall them.
Definitely back up the memory card somewhere else before flashing firmware.

So it is Keyboard Layout problem. I got the Arabic Text one.. could someone help me to recover my old keyboard layout? This update was for Euro only so NSU should forced not to update the phone.

If your keyboard mapping is effected by an upgrade it can not be repaired by PC Suite. It must be returned to a Nokia repair centre for repair.

Change is that if the device is locked, you have to unlock the keyboard with LSK + Fn-key before you can enter your unlock code/phrase.

I have resolved my german keymap-issue (see above), changing to product code 0558785 and re-installing the firmware. Its for E71-1, RM-346. It is just some additional software that I had pre-installed on my original sim-free handset (code 0569803) that got lost. On the phone I have changed the code back, and I will check for the updates on my origial code in a month or so.

Interesting: as I have re-installed the 200.x-firmware from EURO-1 to german, the Content-copier from the PC-Suite worked fine! No reinstallation of settings and so on!

Hello,

I used this: 0561088 number to make update. But, I had a problem. Update stopped (at around 45%) while downloading firmware from nokia to my pc .
I had to wait 10 min and phone started automaticaly. Now is working fine but I think that upgrade did not complete 100%. First, letters Z and Y are replaced and german writing language is “fixed”. I can not use english keyboard any more. I can see new theme, software version by typing *#0000#.

Now, when I want to make new upgrade, I open upgrade manager and he tells me that there is new version (200.21.118) but I have it already installed.

I would like to have english version of this firmware where is english keyboard.
Which number I have to use?

Thank You soo much!!

I’ve done the upgrade (UK model) – and there are PROBLEMS!!!!

– the time on the screensaver does NOT update
– battery power seems to be reduced
– it wiped and reformatted my 16Gb SDHC!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

– and i guess i have to re-drakarious my handset so that i can install software

in short i really really wish i hadn’t flashed – the problems fixed aren’t worth it in comparison to the problems introduced

Holy Shiv! Never heard of a update screwing the memory card up? The 5800 was updated today and what a joy that was, no installing apps, no backing up all my data, etc… It is a pain in the ass to update and reinstall sometimes. Unless nokia add something really significant the v200 will be my last update, as my E71 doesn’t have any probs?

9 02 2009
Jim M.

Hello everyone…
I have 3 important points for everyone here….
There is a lot of buzz on the net about the firmware updates…(Especially for the USA and Canada: NAM).

I just order a new E71-2 NAM from buy.com (Pittsburgh, PA USA, will arrive in 2 days hopefully) and i have done enough googling and other searches to understand that the firmw. updates are only for earlier production devices. if you got the update directly from Nokia, with out messing with the Product Code, this means your mobile was in the first production batch for your country. For USA, (where i reside now), if you have any product code earlier than 0569371, (which is a serial combination number, for different batches) you will find an update. If it is 0569371 or higher, you will not see any firmware update through NSU. Why? Because Nokia, has updated their software during the later product batches.

Second point ( bare with me its for the sake of all E71 lovers), if you are too tempted to make an update, although your NSU doesn’t show one for your product code, you will have to understand that:
Each update is directed to a specific HW\SW combination of a given phone. Nokia has parts from many different suppliers, and virtually no 2 devices are the same. At least from country to country. For instance, in the US, Nokia uses too different Wifi modules parts, with slightly different specifications. That’s because Nokia has many parts manufacturedin in different firms and contracts with different supplying companies… The point is, if you update your device with another device firmware your putting “wrong info” in you’re mobile, no matter how the update seems making it “perform better”. This is why, no updates experiences or reviews, i have come across on the net, where 100% satisfactory…

Another important factor, is that most people, will restore their backed up content from the old firmware content, (which also contains OS files) to the newly updated phone. Making a part of their E71 file system to be corrupt, which leads to freezes, lags, and performance issues. A user should only restore backed up contacts, calendar and images\gallery, and never restore previous applications. Also, the firmware is designed for specific keyboard layout, some users have reported to have different letters for text inputs than what they would usually have. (Spanish versions mostly, for Mexico)…

3rd point, it is always advisable to go through updates, step by step, and not jumping from one release to the n+2 release without getting the n+1 version first.i.e try to get v110 then v200 instead of jumping directly to v200. Why? Because Nokia or Symbian OS releases are mainly incremental and not additional. (Some of the updates are intended to fix previous updates…and so on…). And i am amazed how Nokia doesn’t enforce it, where users can update freely, with disregard to what version they had already, since the product code can be changed easily.

In sum, an update is a serious thing, and most of us are serious users that torture our devices and take them to their design edges, but that never means that we don’t treat them well. We are getting the value of our money, and the benefit of the device….Don’t mess up your phones, just because you want that new version on your mobile screen. If your baby was drastically bugged, or behaving constantly bad, then send it back to Nokia….Switching back to the previous firmware is not easy, if not possible in the first place…..

Updated today here in Romania. Overall performance is improved. Can’t say about the camera improvements because I’m not using it at all. The CONTACTS have a bug, appearing on white, not on chosen wallpaper, as the first released firmware. The INTERNET RADIO function appears on black glass like Nseries background, can’t undestand why. It’s a shame that the people from Nokia do not check all this small things prior to a new firmware release.

Hi everyone,
I have the latest firmware on my e71. I also installed the MagicKey app to remap my keys. But whenever I add to the app list, it automatically closes. Anyone knows how to correct that because I really want to map the volume keys to others. Pls help. Thanks

Try choosing another theme, preferentially Nokia themes. My E71 did the same thing after install and choose not Nokia Theme.

I purchased my E71 in the US about 5 weeks ago. I have upgraded the firmware recently by just going to the site and getting the download. 2 problems that are really annoying me at this time

I cannot access my address book any longer, either through the standard key on the front or by going through the menu. I am unable to see my contacts. The only way for me to see a contact is to start typing the name and hope it appears.

Second- even before the firmware update I had problems downloading apps. I keep getting that blasted error that says “item download failed”

Does anyone have a solution for either problems, if not I will probably just go back to my windows mobile device and call it a day. This is my first Nokia device and I am slowly becoming very unimpressed.

@Ato, I had the same Address book issue while upgrading from the past 2 firmware upgrades. I must clarify though that this issue was ONLY present after I backed up the phone, upgraded the firmware, then RESTORED the phone.

I find this is a dirty way to upgrade the phone, so now I choose to dedicate time when upgrading the firmware by starting fresh each time.

This allows me to keep the phone clean and junk free, just like a fresh windows install.

I also find this allows me to notice new versions of the software I use since most Symbian software doesnt feature auto-update notifications.

Use this method + use Goosync or Google Sync to easily drop your calendar events and contacts back on the phone in quick succession.

Hope that helps!

I’ve got a new E71 on Orange UK (the black one)

I’d like the latest firmware so am I right in thinking that I should use NSS to switch code to 0567045 (EURO1)?

You just need to change the product code using NSS and then fire NSU up and you’ll see the new firmware

Steve

Which product code though? Is it 0567045 (EURO1).

Will that mess up my keyboard or anything?

26 02 2009
Steve

From what I can make out, this is the code for

CODE: 0567045: RM-346 EURO A UK/IRELAND GREY STEEL

As mine is the black E71, would it make any difference apart from maybe some different themes?

For all you people having trouble with the frozen clock in stripe screensaver.

This may solve your problem:
Go to Tools/Themes/Screensaver and do some edits, like change None to Animation, choose some animation file and set minimum timeouts for both animation and backlight.

This helped me.

You can only upgrade via a cable and a Windows machine only at the moment. Yes Nokia has no Mac or Linux love at the moment

My E71 has problems using Netgear routers for Wifi using WPA security, updating firmware never resolved the problem, only changing security to WEP did 😦

This new firmware update effectively destroyed my memory card. It insisted on a memory card password which I NEVER set. Tried everything without luck. When I tired to read the card from a reader on my pc it did not even recognise it, so the update had damaged the card. Lost all the contents and have to buy a new card. Tip: always do an independent backup of the card contents.

Hi

I have received my Nokia E71 from Orange UK. First thing I did was to check the firmware. I am running 200-21-118. When I use the Nokia Software update software it says I already am on the latest frimware. Cam someone guide me on how to upgrade to firmware 3. Thanks
